
What’s the connection between Kung Fu and Productivity?
Have you ever worked extremely hard, yet the results were not satisfying? Have you ever been so busy with work that you hardly had time for yourself or your family? And still, it seemed the pile of work was getting bigger instead of smaller the longer you worked?
A connection between productivity and martial arts became visible in my recent coaching conversation with a client. She struggled with feeling overwhelmed and being very busy yet not achieving what was truly important to her.
She came to the session quite drained. From that space, no great ideas can come. So first, we worked on helping her switch into a different mental and emotional state.
We looked at what usually gives her joy and energy – and my client’s passion and joy have always been for her in the practice of martial arts. As she connected to that, a light bulb moment happened for her!
Power of Strategic Balance
She realized that the key to her situation was balance.
Kung-Fu movement needs a balance. A balance of muscles, strength, and relaxation and understanding what the move requires to look smooth and beautiful. She mentioned that the action is not smooth or natural when someone tries too hard. When it is not strategically balanced, it doesn’t work. She realized she had been trying so hard to make her new endeavor happen that she lost the balance in her schedule.
A new action to regain balance became clear to her. She decided to sprinkle into her busy schedule some strategic pauses to plan, reflect, and prioritize. She realized she got so trapped in the “action taking mode” that she didn’t take enough time to plan and strategize and ended up doing tasks that could have been delegated or deleted from her to-do list.
If you do too much of either one (action taking or planning & strategy), the result will not be what you expect or wish for. What do you need more of in your schedule? What do you need less of to feel more balanced and empowered in your work? With your team?
