It’s Never Too Late To Change
It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness, that is life.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Ever since childhood, I dreamt about joining the Starfleet. I wanted to travel the world, meet new cultures, make friends with all sorts of people, and be a part of something bigger than myself.
Of course, as I grew up, I faced the hard, cold truth that humans are decades, if not centuries, away from realizing the Gene Roddenberry dream. The dream of a unified society where there is no place for discrimination and the only thing that truly matters is self-growth, and the only obstacle is one’s imagination.
Although I couldn’t meet my hero, the charismatic captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek, he had already done his magic. It had awakened the burning desire to connect, the urge to boldly go beyond my comfort zone, and to be a leader who is insightful, inclusive, empathic, and influential. In the absence of a role model, I became my own hero.
Thirty years in the making
So I grew up believing that, in time, I can do anything with willpower and effort. I knew my goals, and I embarked on my journey. Fast forward, and I was finally there. It took 30 years for me to get there, but better late than never. I had everything: I met the love of my life, got married, and became a proud father. While traveling the world, I met all kinds of people and made lots of friends. I tried everything from teaching, modeling, marketing, sales to software development, project management, and systems design. I was a secretary, a bookkeeper, a CEO, a business manager, and a CTO.
And Finally I got there…
And finally, despite all the discrimination and lack of support, I became the group CIO of an international organization with 6 figure salary. I had my very own spacious and luxurious office on the 30th floor in the millennium tower, looking towards the beautiful Danube river. Just like the Star Trek: I had my crew, my command, and my authority.

But it all came at a high price.
In pursue of my desires, I made a mess out of my life. Anxiety, fear, and anger were my constant companion. I was overweight, unhappy, and burned out. I was not in command. Every day, I had to fight my way through an organization with a toxic culture. Everyday was a fight. Initiatives were failing, people were stalling, and hope was nowhere to be found; Or so I thought.
A conversation that changed everything
And as I was contemplating with the resignation idea and wondering how can I ever find such a well paying job again, the universe came to rescue me. I met someone who made me see things from a completely different perspective. I still can remember that experience: “Oh my God! I could’ve achieved even more, faster, with less effort, joyfully, and with ease!? What magic is this?” – to which he replied: “Coaching! Just Coaching!” and so things started to change drastically for me. I developed a healthy diet, I lost weight, and became calm and grounded.
I broke through the board’s resistance to change. My initiatives began to bear fruits. I transformed competitors into allies. My fan base grew exponentially, and this in turn motivated my team, and I became the ambassador of change. I learned the ways of influential leaders. My enemies respected me, and my friends followed my lead, willingly with trust.
And at the pick of my success, I decided to commit myself to things that truly matter: mine and others’ growth and happiness. So I reinvented myself. I quitted my job and became a professional coach. I couldn’t be happier. I did it for myself and for all those who’re looking for their role model, their captain Jean-Luc Picard.
